Born in Pollachi, Jai spent his early school years in Trichy, surrounded by family, comfort, and familiarity. But life had a different lesson waiting for him. For his 11th and 12th, he was sent to a hostel in Namakkal — away from his parents, his home, and everything he knew.
“I wasn’t happy about it,” Jai admits honestly.
Being away from family at such a young age was tough. But that phase slowly shaped him into someone more independent, more resilient.
Little did he know, this was just the beginning.
The Golden Days of College
Jai went on to pursue Mechanical Engineering at Anna University — and this chapter changed his life.
College wasn’t just about classrooms and exams for him. It was about organising events, working with teams, managing people, and taking responsibility.
“That was the golden period of my life,” he says with a smile.
Through extracurricular activities, Jai learned lessons that no textbook could teach:
Team management
Time management
People skills
Proactiveness
Positive attitude
Enthusiasm
These weren’t just “college skills.” They became life skills. And even today, in Canada, he still uses them.
From Defence to a Bigger Dream
After college, Jai worked as a Research Assistant in Defence — a proud moment for any engineering graduate. But deep inside, he felt the pull of something bigger.
- He wanted to explore the world.
- He wanted global exposure.
- He wanted to challenge himself.
That’s when he decided to move to Canada. But his father had a condition: “Get a good IELTS score first.”

Jai scored a 7.5 band in IELTS — a milestone that opened doors for his future.
Even today, he refers to Wren & Martin for grammar clarity, just as Owenita Ma’am had recommended.
And Jai strongly believes in one thing: “Going abroad without IELTS is a blunder. Communication is everything. Without it, people will underestimate you.”
At Trichy Plus, Jai also got an opportunity to work, which gave him real-world experience — something that later helped him stand out in Canada.
Reality Hits in Canada
Canada wasn’t the dreamland Jai had imagined:
- There were no parents to support him.
- No home-cooked meals.
- No comfort zone.
He had to: Cook, Clean, Earn, Study and manage everything on his own.
“Reality hit me hard,” he says. But instead of giving up, Jai adapted.
He joined Concordia University for Mechanical Science and Engineering — and discovered a completely different education system.
Only 10 hours of classes per week. The rest was about projects, concepts, and practical learning.
- No memorising
- No mugging up
- Only understanding.
Exams were open-book, but tough. Professors were strict. Concepts were deep.
“Here, the professor is the king,” Jai laughs. “But you learn for life.”
Growth Beyond the Classroom
In his second semester itself, Jai became a Teaching Assistant.
Why? Because of the work experience and confidence he had gained earlier — especially at Trichy Plus.
Working closely with professors also helped him understand how:
Questions are framed
Concepts are tested
Thinking matters more than marks
He realised something important:
“Masters is easier than Bachelors. But four years of Bachelors in this system will really grind you — and shape you.”
In Canada, teachers and professors are highly respected, especially because they are connected with industry and R&D.
It’s not an exam-centric society. It’s a learning-centric society.
Life Today: Balance, Respect & Responsibility
Jai has now been in Canada for 12 years. What does he enjoy the most?
Work-life balance:
- No calls after work hours
- No disturbances on weekends
- Everyone respects personal time
But Jai also feels concerned about how some immigrants behave, as it creates a negative image.
His advice to students is clear:
Be respectful
Be independent
Be adaptable
Be mentally prepared
He also suggests learning French, as it makes life and opportunities easier in Canada.
